Privacy in the Great White North

Hey again. Just a quick announcement. A little while ago, I mentioned (around the one minute mark) I had a life update to share that could impact the show. So, here it is:

I moved to Canada.

My partner and I were presented with a pretty slick opportunity to relocate here, and we took it. And to be honest, I'm pretty stoked about it. Not just for the poutine, the metric system, and [YOUTUBE WARNING] charming encounters with geese,  but because up here, privacy is a bit different than it is in the States.

From the beginning, Jay and I were serious about making Signal Jam a little different from the other privacy content out there. We felt (and still do) the privacy space is, for better or worse, a bit slanted towards America; the technology and services available, the relatively lax policies and legislative environment, even some of the tech and products. To be fair, there's plenty that is covered by other privacy enthusiasts that are applicable globally. But, there are certainly some "amenities" you can only get if you live in the United States.

The legislative and regulatory in Canada is changing, too. Like the UK  and EU before it,  Canada is in the midst of a spirited debate about a controversial new bill  that could weaken encryption and introduce backdoors into encryption, and some companies are not having it.

All this to say, living in Canada means new opportunities to learn, play, and experiment with what works here. There's also some Canadian based firms and folks I'd love to have on the show to share their perspective.

So, to my Canadian friends, I'm glad to be here! And to my American friends, fret not. I still have business and family that will bring me back from time to time. I'm hoping I can use my presence in both countries to stay current and keep bringing fresh things to chat about on the show and blog.

As always, stay private, and I'll see you on the next one (hint: very, very soon).
